The problem with Gus is that he constantly defaults to his "drug lord" voice in this series, where before it was infrequently used to contrast against his normal demeanor. To me, Gus was at his most intimidating with his fake niceness. There's not enough of that "polite on the outside, venomous on the inside" in BCS. There's no scene like where Walt refuses Gus's business offer, and he just replies with a forced professional smile and "enjoy your meal." Maybe it's Esposito, but I think he's just being directed terribly. And I'm not sure I can lay too much fault with the direction either, because his place in the story is different. In BrBa he was an antagonist, and in BCS, he's closer to a protagonist of his own little side story. He also doesn't have good enough characters to play off of. The main character he talks to is Mike, who isn't enough of a foil. At least in BrBa, he had people like Walt, Jesse and sometimes Hank to contrast with. Gus's problem is something more fundamental. As good as Better Call Saul can be sometimes, it really can't avoid the problems that come with prequels.

Am the user you're replying to, and I completely agree. It's no one's fault in particular. Almost definitely not Giancarlo Esposito's considering he delivered one of the best performances in Breaking Bad. I rewatched Breaking Bad recently and realized how often Gus has to whisper in that show, it's very different compared to Better Call Saul where most of his interactions are with Mike, Bolsa, and the other drug lords.

Having done creative projects myself, I can wholly relate to the human struggle that goes into creating something like Better Call Saul and feel wrong about the idea of taking it for free.

Interesting, I've poured my heart and soul into creative projects too but have never felt bad about piracy, nor at the prospect of someone taking my shit for free. I've schemed about how to make money off creative stuff though, but nothing ever became popular enough for it to become a reality. I think I'm most nostalgic for the early era of YouTube when the greatest number of people made stuff for free, so I want to try to be like those benevolent creators back then.

That's another thing. Central to Gus's appeal is the mystery and intrigue surrounding him. You don't really know who he is, where he's really from, or what he's really thinking about. One of my favorite scenes with him in Breaking Bad is when Hank asks him if Gus Fring is his real name. It's my favorite because it gives you more insight into his character, but paradoxically makes it so that you know less about him than you did before. Contrast that with tidbits about his past in BCS, where they tell you more about him, but without actually adding any more intrigue to him. The scene where he talks to a comatose Hector is one of the worst in the series imo. I don't understand the people who want yet another prequel series with Gus at the helm. Why do we need to know an entire character from crib to casket? Keep the mystery. That's a problem Better Call Saul seems to have in general with a lot of its characters.
