It's easier to dodge a bullet than it is to block a bullet. Shields take up one of your arms which could be used to more accurately fire your rifle or do something else. Effective combat shields are 50+ pounds and it's extremely difficult to run and hold up something like that to actually stop bullets.

You could put an engine and wheels on it. And so it doesn't get stuck in the soft sand, add some tracks. While you're at it, you can put some wrap around armor on the sides too. Now that I think of it, maybe it could carry a larger caliber supporting weapon of its own that can swivel.

bombing isnt pinpoint accurate like movies or your video games. even modern bombers need targets painted and struggle to be accurate. its like saying you should be able to bomb aircraft carriers easily when it was a 'drop and pray' type of aiming system from thousands of feet up. these gunner holes and buildings are not remotely close to size of aircraft carrier surface and we could barely hit the aircraft carriers without massive losses.

because as WWII major engagements go it was rather bloodless to send in a bunch of rookies to secure a beachhead and then bring in the seasoned troops. A generation earlier and any general would sell his daughters maidenheads for a day like this in France.
