It was telling a genuinely unique story not something that fits current "tastes". Everything was on the table there were no artificial restrictions and that's what made it genuine and honest.
Fantasy is subjective. This is the subjective fantasy of this shows decision makers. What you consider suitable fantasy is irrelevant.
That's the type of fantasy that becomes the most popular show in the world. "Current taste" bullshit gets ignored like The Witcher or Wheel of Time. Though if they were adapted right they could have been popular shows too.

Velaryons are an offshoot of Valyrians which is basically the equivalent of the Roman empire. Valyrians that were dragonriders were concerned about keeping blood lines pure. There's literally 0 textual reason why Corlys couldn't be black.

At the end of the dance whatever "good" was in Rhaenyra and her claim is long gone. She basically goes insane slowly. First she loses her three first born kids, then she loses her dragon (which to a dragonrider is just as bad as losing family). She was totally mad at the end of the civil war. Corys siding against her was, at that point, the good thing to do.
I do wonder if they'll go for a narrative of Rhaenyra slowly become more more ruthless like Daemon while Daemon becomes bit softer around the edges once you throw in Nettles (if they throw in Nettles). Regardless I'll tolerate black Corys is nothing else because I want to see Matt handling Daemon, and the dragon duels. Can't wait to be disappointed on both fronts
