Does Steve Buscemi's, Mr. Pink in Reservoir Dogs, make a valid point about tipping and our society?
Does Steve Buscemi's, Mr. Pink in Reservoir Dogs, make a valid point about tipping and our society?
No he’s just a weasely asshole. Sure his criticism about society might be valid, but him being stingy with his money and underpaying for a meal and service is top asshole behavior. No wonder he got into the career criminal industry. Also, he’s talking from a place of ignorance, because some of them make less than minimum wage if they work for tips
for the americans here, how do you know when you're supposed to tip or not? like if your see the postman putting a letter in your mailbox or a walmart clerk helps you find an item or a cop pulls you over are you supposed to tip them?
Make less than minimum wage? Isn’t that shit illegal?
Why don't their employers just pay them enough? Seriously someone answer this question
Yes, tipping is a scam and anyone who tips is retarded.
They don't make less than minimum wage. They get paid a few dollars an hour by restaurant and the tips are supposed to make up the rest of their wage (plus some, if people tip). If they don't reach what's considered min. wage then the restaurant is supposed to match the bare minimum.
they don't want to pay them
It might be dependent on state laws, but I know some waiters and waitresses make like 2.43 an hour or something like that because of some special exemption to the law for that service
The burger tipping customs are retarded. What is it nowadays 20 % minimum? Just bake that shit into food prices and bann tipping
It's like asking "how do you talk to a girl?"
It's just basically understood social skills.
You tip servers, bartenders, cab drivers, food delivery, bellhops, barbers and professions that fall into these categories (ie nail salon, barista, movers, etc). Non-typical situations would be I guess casino dealers and stylists if you're getting tailored.for a wedding or w/e?
They cut the tips off their children's foreskins so of course the cucks voluntarily pay the wages of some restaurant's staff on top of the bill.
tipping is retarded. especially when people think the price of the food should dictate the tip. Takes no more effort for your dumb ass to carry a steak to the table than it does to carry a burger. Entitled faggots. Especially now with everyone desperate to hire people in stores. If you choose to work below minimum wage, it's your own damn fault
Food prices already went up 40% restaurants are ghost towns.
Your burger is now $22. I see food costs all day long and operating costs. Nearly every restaurant owner is in massive debt, and some of them are even decent people, believe it or not.
Banning tipping and baking into food costs only benefits fucking Applebee's and places that could theoretically take the hit because they're large national chains. Places in the US like Portland have done exactly this and it's massively affected quality and diversity of businesses that don't have gigantic "restaurant groups" opening the trendiest new spot then closing down 2 years later the second it stops being trendy.
True. If there are any tips it should go back to whoever cooked your food.
Its the responsibility of businesses to pay their employees enough that no person should ever need nor expect to be tipped. The problem and benefit with tipping is it allows a person to receive better service if they pay more money, which is a fair exchange. It should never be expected though
Honestly I know this is going to cause butthurt but when I visited Europe (France and Prague) I noticed a significant drop in quality of service in restaurants. Truly fucking horrible.
It's situational, all restaurants except fast food restaurants, except for delivery boys, you're supposed to tip the bartenders, waiters and waitresses. You also tip the maid in hotels, and the bellhops, or room service. I've never heard of tipping mailmen or policemen. It's usually just the hospitality industry where you tip.
People tip cab drivers? The back smells like puke. I never tip drivers.
Waiters might spit in your food if you don't tip, but a cab driver has the opportunity to murder you.
No. Tipping is obligatory in America. Don't like it? Start lobbying.
And yet it works in most other nations just fine
Does that go for Uber and Lyft drivers as well?
Mailmen aren't a thing anymore, at least in most cities. Used to, you had one mailman, and the "tip" tradition was usually to leave them booze at Christmas. Same thing with doormen.
If you ride with Uber or Lyft you're already dead.
I’ve never actually been in a taxi, I have ubered a few times, but I never tipped. The fair is already pretty inflated to what it once was. A 7 minute drive was like 15 dollars
America has far and away the best and most enthusiastic dining out culture in the world.
>Honestly I know this is going to cause butthurt but when I visited Europe (France and Prague) I noticed a significant drop in quality of service in restaurants. Truly fucking horrible.
Like what? I've been to europe too, and the service was identical. The only difference was that I didn't expect some bitch to come after I left the restaurant to inquire about my "small tip"
>because some of them make less than minimum wage if they work for tips
Everyone who is legally employed in the USA is paid minimum wage. If a "tipped" employee makes zero tips then the employer must pay them minimum wage.
If anyone should be tipped it should be the chef. Why would I tip the retarded bitch who scribbles down my order?
Oh no, the wage slave didn't hover over my table constantly and interrupt the conversation with a fake laugh and forced smile plastered on her face in hopes of making getting a few more pitybucks
>Places in the US like Portland have done exactly this and it's massively affected quality and diversity of businesses that don't have gigantic "restaurant groups" opening the trendiest new spot then closing down 2 years later the second it stops being trendy.
It works just fine in the state of California.
The scale and the high demand should therefore make operating easier, no?
And this is judged by what criteria? If the restaurants are all in debt.. even without paying their staff, how in the fuck can you even possibly think you are ranked on the world scale. We ALL have restaurants
>and some of them are even decent people, believe it or not.
restaurant owners are the biggest scumbags in the world. they literally use the cheapest worst products, they underpay their staff because they get "tips" and they expect to be treated like jesus or some shit
I don’t know, I guess it depends where you go. A lot of the time the waitresses have just been doing the job for so long they’re just putting up a hardly convincing friendly attitude and don’t even really want to make any real chit chat with you, though. Some of them have almost all but completely given up. Every once in awhile you get a cool waiter or waitress, though. The worst has to be drive thrus now. If someone actually tries to be friendly and doesn’t just give off the impression you’re inconveniencing them it comes as a surprise, although I don’t go through a lot. I think places pushing the idea that you “have to be friendly with the customers” sometimes makes thing almost slightly uncomfortable to a certain extent. I wouldn’t mind if it was more like Japan, where everything is just very formal, and there’s no small talk whatsoever. You just sit, tell them what you want, they bring it to you, then you pay and bow to each other and that’s it. And then you don’t have to worry about tipping either
>Every once in awhile you get a cool waiter or waitress, though
why do you give a shit about this? why do you care that some faggot/woman is "nice to you"
just write down my order and get the fuck out of my face. i never understood this fake niceness bullshit. if you enjoy that shit than you must be really lonely
Probably because when you’re having to interact with someone and they’re like you, it ruins the mood you’re in at the restaurant a little. You’re probably used to functioning super clanky though so no longer care
Yes, he's correct. Especially if we're having this "multiculturalism" horseshit shoved down our throats. We don't tip in my culture.
>it ruins the mood you’re in at the restaurant a little
how fucking sensitive are you? does your mood get ruined to if the local DMV bitch wasn't nice to you when she was calling out your number? god you're pathetic
>when you’re having to interact with someone and they’re like you, it ruins the mood you’re in at the restaurant a little
It doesn’t effect my mood or hurt my feelings, an awkward or unsociable waiter just makes things slightly uncomfortable is all. That’s why I said I wouldn’t actually mind if they dropped the fake friendliness and just took your order expressionlessly. But they try to make a little bit of small talk with you because that’s what they’re told to do
>But they try to make a little bit of small talk with you because that’s what they’re told to do
fuck those faggots. and no, they're not "cool" for making small talk. it's always forced and is never genuine.
it usually goes like this
>hey yeah i really like your shirt!!
>nice weather isn't it???
>hey.. so are you ready to take my order?
fuck that shit. fuck wagies. imagine being such a pathetic loser waiter that you have to play on peoples' emotions of pity to get one extra dollar. absolutely disgusting
Wrong.
I think it’s a problem with people expectations too, though. I wouldn’t mind living in a place like Japan where everyone knows you just don’t do that. If they’re actually cool or friendly I wouldn’t mind talking to them at all, though, and maybe it would be funny or make the atmosphere better. But if they’re not friendly they probably get complaints that they’re rude or not interested in the customers. Ideally, only friendly people by nature would get into being a waiter or waitress, but a lot of the times, they don’t give a shit about the job and probably want to tell you to go fuck yourself, but they just act polite and a little bit fake friendly with you instead. It’s usually never a really bad problem, though, I just pointed it out because he said that America has the best restaurant culture. I wouldn’t even say it’s particularly good. Maybe if you go to a high end place and the people are getting good money from the tips so they’re qualified or happy to be there it would be the best in the world
Getting a neighbourhood's worth of liquor on Christmas. Jeez I hope these guys could self-regulate their drinking.
You should go eat inside of chic-fil-a sometime. They are like the mormons on south park in there.
What counts a nice? Take you in the back and suck your dick?
i just fucking hate tipping. and yeah, i agree that america has the WORST restaurant culture, if that may even be called that. some spic making a burrito with expired ingredients doesn't count as "restaurant culture" btw.
tipping makes my blood boil. the fucking expectation, these fucking doggish pity eyes from waitresses/waiters when they give you the check. the awkward math that everyone has to do.
doing your services without any fakeness or inducing pity.
Well, not to try to offend you, but it does sound like you have a super pessimistic and cynical attitude. I would be fine with any waiter or waitress just being themselves and taking the orders, but if they’re actually cool or friendly that would just be a plus. I guess the problem stems from other customers who do want there to always be a level of friendliness and demand it or they stop going there. That’s what adds to some of the clanky fake friendliness and unfunny small talk they add. But I guess with boomers sort of dying out, maybe the world will shift a little bit away from that anyway
I tip in restaurants, but I deduct minimum wage from it. They'll never accept my argument about giving me a $10+ discount, so they get nothing.
There's really no point tipping people who make $15 per hour. If they wanted tips, they shouldn't have supported minimum wage laws.
i mean im against tipping but this lame fuck is arguing about a literal dollar so yeah in this case hes a dumb fuck
I have never tipped in my life.
Want extra money? Do extra work.
I'd love to go to burgerland just so I could not tip in restaurants, go fuck yourself you dumb waiter shitter.
Yeah, this is true. The situation was technically being charged $1 for a meal provided by his employer, with the employer then free to do with the money what he wished.
I'm from Canada, and more than once I've had bartenders actually make snarky remarks about me not tipping. They think every time they grab a glass, pull a lever, and set the glass on the bar, it's worth $1. It's fucking not.
In England you don't really tip waitresses in pubs - you can order your food from the table using an app and you pay up front - only place where they still do it are fancy restaurants really.
I do bartending and I hate you. You’re stiffing us. You’re not just paying for the drink, you’re paying for the service. We’re sitting behind a bar tending to a lot of different people the whole night, and you’re not chipping in the fair share >:(
who the fuck would serve an american well
>customers fault for not tipping because the owner doesn't want to pay his worker
top level amerimutt logic, the only problem here is this country doesn't put the right people in jail
>You’re not just paying for the drink, you’re paying for the service.
Exactly. So why should I pay for the service a second time?
Yeah, no, you’re stupid. Restaurants aren’t even a very lucrative business to get into in the first place. The problem is you have to how low prices just to compete, and if you’re paying them more than that you have raise the price of the food to make a profit so almost no one can afford to do it. It really works out to be about the same thing, but reworking it at this point would take an institutional reworking of the laws, and probably require tipping to just be outlawed
Cry me a river faggot.
Cause you’re not paying for a second of time, you’re paying for the 30 or so minutes it takes of standing there waiting until you’re ready for the next drink
No, I'm not.
removing a cap and transferring liquid between one bottle to another? wow bro what an amazing service thats totally worth $5 dollars
Your labor is worthless. Get a real job where you make good money like being a tick tock influencer.
Exactly, because you’re a cheap faggot who has no social grace
In my country people usually only tip if the service or food was excellent. Then in most plavea all the tips get gathered up and are periodically split equally between staff members as a kind of bonus.
No the tipping culture allows for a somewhat irrational amount of restaurants relative to demand. Amerifat memes asides theres more restaurants per capita demand whatever than there should be. I'm ambivalent to it either way too many boring fucks here use it as a crutch to do something socially. It's basic stupid human instinct that a person is more likely to eat at a place that's $20 with the 15% tip not included that they end up paying vs. just listing $23 on the menu though
>waaaahh I have to do my job waaaah give me more money!!! wasaaaaahhh
Absolutely only retarded americgoblins think otherwise
Go wash a toilet or something. I'll pay you to do that, not stand around washing the same glass five times in a row.
