From the point of view of a producer he wants to grow the audience so he threw a bunch of shit at the wall with Discovery to see what stuck, thinking that he already had trek fans as a captive audience, but that turned out to be hubris and he should've paid attention to what happened to Enterprise and played it safe, which is what he's finally doing 5 years later with SNW.

I think Kurtzman wanted to make it appealing to a wider audience but everything he makes from Mummy to Picard turns to piss and shit. Like, does he watch the garbage he makes? Is he just some greedy hollywood prick flipping properties for cash?
He even had the most perfect opportunity imaginable working for him: a pandemic where the entire world was watching dumb shit like Tiger King, where Star Wars was effectively dead after their stillborn trilogy, and he couldn't build a fanbase with half a dozen Trek series.
In literally anyone else's hands this could have been Trek's time to shine.

That's the part that bothers me so much. This isn't some ephemeral concept that eludes everyone's grasp. It's a simple formula of comfy setting, pleasant characters, and timeless questions, and they turned it into a grim setting, annoying characters, and "no other time and circumstance matter but this one" "timely" wokeshit. It couldn't have been more opposite and still be set in space.

I mean its as good as any. Today we can monitor spacetime ripples from black holes and neutron stars merging thousands of light years away. If we saw something like multiple warp drives it would probably revolutionize science and if we were in a similar situation where we invented the atomic bomb we'd probably figure out how to weaponize it first.
Does it make perfect scientific sense, no probably not but point is that they figured it out based on observations and they had a huge incentive to weaponize it.
