I've trained dogs for 20 years. Most terrier breeds and all breeds bred for blood sports are not great breeds for the average family. The American Pit Bull Terrier was created by mixing a large terrier breed, the Old English Terrier, and a bulldog breed, The old English Bulldog. Terriers are bred to have a strong prey drive. They kill varmints by reacting very quickly to movement and squeaking noises. They quickly chase down the prey and bite hard and then violently shake their head back and forth. This helps prevent being bitten or scratched by the prey while they crush it with their bite and pierce it with their teeth. The Old English Bulldog was bred for bullbaiting. The blood sport where dogs attacked a captive bull. The Old English Bulldog's instincts drive it to attack large animals, to bite down hard and to hold.

If your goal is to have your kids "protected" by a dog whose instincts drive it to react to small animals, loud noises, squeaky sounds, babies, little children, adults, cats, other dogs, livestock as large as cows and horses and to attack them quickly, bite down hard, violently shake their head and never let go, well then the American Pit Bull Terrier is the perfect "protection" dog.

I work mostly with retrievers. Their instincts drive them to retrieve with a light touch, a soft mouth, so as to avoid damaging the waterfowl. That's why they love their tennis balls. I could never train a retriever to not love to chase down a tennis ball. In the same way these pit mommies and daddies can never train the instincts out of a pit bull. It doesn't mean most Pit Bulls will hurt other animals or pets but there is a much higher likelihood that a Pit Bull will attack than with many other breeds. And if they do attack there is a much higher likelihood that it will result in serious injury or death than with many other breeds.

Most families should get a Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, Poodle or Labradoodle/Goldendoodle.

No and no. Huskies are bad for families because they're loud and extremely energetic. If you don't have time to spend an hour a day wearing out a husky you should own one. And pits are just unpredictably violent.

Not him but I own a greyhound and they’re ridiculously laid back to the point where it’s comical. They’re tolerant of people but are generally not lovey dovey dogs because at the track they’re trained to be handled not loved. Some can have high small dog prey drives but mine has never had any issues nor even been suspected of having issues when the foster group gave him to me. They occasionally get runner energy, but it’s seldom and they spend most of their time just laying around and doing nothing. Half the time it feels like owning a stuffed animal because they never make a sound and barely leave their bed.
