No one really knows what the "rules" are since they are seemingly broken all the time, or rather they have different standards for domestic Chinese films and foreign ones. For example, a lot of people claim that Chinese censors don't allow movies with ghosts and supernatural beings because they're considered "disrespectful to ancestors" or something. However, there are multiple Chinese movies that feature ghosts, witches, etc. These elements seem to be allowed since they are derived from Chinese folklore. Using the folklore angle was how the first horror movie in the USSR was allowed to be made (Viy 1967).

See they seem to allow those types of movies as long as they're based on old Chinese legends rather than Christianity or other Western concepts.
