The main reason is that they want to make Howard look like shit in front of Cliff in order for Cliff to want to cut ties with Howard and HMM as quickly as possible. This would lead him to push for a quick settlement in the sandpiper case as his company is currently working with HMM on the case. This quick settlement means that Jimmy gets his cut fast instead of having to wait years for the case to be resolved
Secondary reason is out of petiness from Kim and Jimmys experiences with Howard over the years

>jimmy and kim finally enact the plan that they've been working on since ep. 1
>kim and mike meet and we learn who's been following her
>we learn that jimmy is losing favor at the courthouse and is simultaneously gaining more favor among criminals
>we learn what's going through gus' head at the moment
>"hurr nothing happened"
??? not to mention we're literally one episode removed from a main character's death
