The Witch is far more well-balanced because it contains a human element in the story, we can follow characters' development and their motivations are discernable to a degree that serves the film.
The Northman is a visual spectacle and feast for the senses but it's ultimately hollow, like an average Malick film. It starts off really strong but really falls off before the mid-point, and the plot takes some frustratingly stupid turns to stretch it out.
It's all of Eggers strengths and weaknesses amplified, so it's extremely lopsided. Valhalla Rising is a far better example of what The Northman failed to deliver.

Not enough action to draw in the Conan the barbarian crowd, and not enough quiet moments to draw in the Andrei Rublev crowd. Went in really wanting to like it, and being a big fan of the VVITCH and the lighthouse. He shines at contained stories, where he can pack in a lot. He bit off more than he could chew. But I still think its commendable he took a risk and tried something out of his comfort zone, even if the outcome was subpar. Still pisses me off he compares it to Tarkovsky.

I saw this last night and it was genuinely the first time in years I have sat in a completely booked out cinema. Every seat was taken. I sat next to a stranger on my left.

Black Panther has the Marvel brand which immediately brings hundreds of millions no matter how shitty the movie is (up until Morbius but even that did better than Northman)

Also Black Panther had a truly massive marketing campaign, likely as much as the movie cost, so everyone was aware when it came out and there were huge stories in the media about how "important" it was
