2 more books according to Fat Man. Problem is, we're not even at the middle point in the overall story. At the end of Dance, we're ALMOST at the turning point in the plot where all the characters start moving back to the central climax. Almost, but not quite there. If he wrote a major die-off for one or two storylines (similar to Red Wedding) I could see him maybe being finished in 3 more books. Maybe.

The thing you have to remember is that the show ending isn't the final ending. The show actually ends on a hidden cliffhanger since Danny is obviously not perma-dead and Jon just fucked off beyond the wall. There is a Game of Thrones S9 coming (eventually) and it's possible that HBO has convinced him to hold off on the books while they win back show fans with spinoff series that actually land an ending.

It's crazy to me that when they started the TV series he told them he'd have it finished by the end of it, and yet he didn't release a single book over the course of it's run.
I think he just doesn't feel motivated to do it because the ending he had in mind, bran becoming king and Arya killing the white walkers, wasn't well received. We can bitch and moan about the execution, but the general plot points and endings for each character are already known, and I don't think most people are happy with them.

Arya killing a White Walker (or two) isn't the issue and honestly isn't a big deal. Sam killed a White Walker. She kills the Night King on the show but in the books there is no Night King so it doesn't matter.

That's really all it is. People aren't pissed at the spoiled book ending so much as they're pissed at all the shortcuts and leaps it took to get there. The major points that got spoiled were fine but once you get a little angry on the internet you tend to get a lot angry as you start noticing a lot of little things that you otherwise might not and there is a whole pile-on effect and that's what happened with the show ending.

The big stinker was Arya killing Night King, but again that's not gonna be in the books anyway and also most readers who know their shit don't think Jamie and Cersei play out anything like the show in the books. I think the only big points are Danny/Jon and King Bran and you can't really judge those based on show reactions because the show was completely tainted by butthurt by that point.
