I used to work at McDonald’s. We’d start preparing for lunch like 30 minutes before the scheduled time. So once the clock hits 10:00 or whatever, we can’t make anymore breakfast for you.

Lots of good points ITT about the switch over to lunch but they all miss one thing: the movie shows that they actually had his requested breakfast items in the warming hopper. Rick would rather throw them in the trash than sell them to Bill. Why? Rick is a nobody fast food manager whose only power in life is over customers and wage slaves. Most of the time he has to treat customers with courtesy but the lunch switchover gave him an opportunity to exercise his tiny bit of petty power, so he did.

It wasn't really a kitchen. By "kitchen" they meant the little toaster oven and mini-fridge right behind them. And apparently that takes thirty minutes to fucking clean.

Sometimes nicer restaurants will specify a "last seating" time so both the diners and the staff can finish the dinner service and have the place close on time. Anyone who has worked in fast food around closing time knows the company has two conflicting policies about serving customers who come in at the last minute and not going over the allotted cleaning time, which assumes cleaning starts before closing. It sucks if you spend twenty minutes cleaning the grill and the fryers only to have someone come in and want you to dirty them up again to make them food.
It's not the customer's fault. They shouldn't need to know about the ins and outs of how the restaurant operates, especially where there's a bright "OPEN" sign in the window inviting them in. It's not the employee's fault for being upset at being put in an impossible position of preparing food without dirtying the equipment. It's the company policies where they try to save a few dollars on labor at the end of the day.

Why are people like this to fast food/retail employees? I've been fortunate enough to avoid working those jobs and always treat them with respect, it's always people who are making barely above a McDonald's/Walmart wage who suddenly act like emperors there

Actually based post. As stressful as food service can be, you are held to a much lower standard when it comes to your responsibility. All the shit I complained about as a teen in food service is very minor compared to the bullshit responsibilities that come with big boy jobs. Mandatory callouts, audits, working 50-70 hours a week because of shit the other contractors fucked up and now we have to do meet the inspection deadline.

Looking back I would gladly help out a customer asking for me to bend the rules or go out of my way as long as they were polite. But it’s the other shit that pissed me off for no reason and that shouldn’t have, compared to the stuff I deal with now. My responsibility now comes with the territory, as does doing little favors for customers despite protocol for food service.
