Season 12 opening was pure kino. I agree it's not as consistent as it was but it's not a bad show to throw on in the background while doing something else. They're too old for their characters at this point.

The new season, last two really, is... I wanna say woke but it is more then that. Its more like they just don't take the risks they did in the earlier seasons. It seems... fragile? Shy? Unsure of itself? I dunno but it's not the same. You can tell it wants to be what it once was but at the same time worries about the consequences where as once they were care free. Like a kid that broke his arm riding a bike and now they're afraid to get back on. It's more sad then anything. It's like the death of innocence.

I think the word you're looking for is comfortable. They just don't care about being edgy anymore so they don't bother trying. They constantly aim for low hanging fruit. A show that showed nothing but contempt for politics and current events now constantly uses both for jokes. They're comfortable, bored and lazy and it's clear as day. They're just too old to be playing the characters they're supposed to be, I always thought Danny was a weaker character but now he's becoming the strongest one because of his sheer professionalism. On top of being too old Rob McElhenney disappeared up his own asshole, Glen & Kaitlin are completely over their characters. Charlie and Danny are the only ones still clocking in and it shows.

Season 13 Episode 10. That stupid shit tainted the whole show. I get it, he's got gay parents, but frankly, no one cares. The show was never about their personal lives and suddenly inserting personal lives shit into the show just feels like they lost focus for the show as a whole.

They were always "woke", Glenn at least is pretty anti- American capitalism etc. and they clearly see the show as partly a satire of what negative behaviour they see "American values" producing when applied to real life
Before the far right started making a visible comeback post-2016 they felt more able to make edgier and offensive jokes because it seemed to them that those attitudes were on their way out, now it's clear they're here to stay they obviously feel less comfortable with what they see as perpetuating societal problems compared to before when it didn't seem to replicating anything that would be encouraged in real life

This is it in a nutshell, the premise of the show worked when they were 30 years old (they also made me feel a lot better about myself at 30). These guys are all in their late 40s now.
Honestly they had a good run especially considering that they avoided the late-stage "very special" episodes and casting overhauls that keep sitcoms running past their prime. A S15 episode could conceivably have taken place the day after a S2 episode which is pretty impressive.

A) They get too attached to their characters like other long-running misanthropic comedies and refuse to do anything too harsh to them in the last seasons and end on some sentimental lovey-dovey tripe like the gay episode
B) Meta-commentary episode/movie on the cast's lives being engulfed by these characters where the characters enter the real world and encounter their actors like the League Of Gentleman movie or Red Dwarf's Back To Earth miniseries
C) They go full Young Ones and kill off the gang or the whole planet at the end of the last episode

They let their personal political leanings bleed into the show starting in S11 EP1 when they did the singing black people episode and at the end implied that black children get shot by police for playing with toys. The show never looked back and continued letting their ridiculous views bleed into the show really reaching peak woke when Mac did he dance routine.

Prior to S11, whenever the show dipped into politics, they always parodied both sides. It's sad to watch now.

Unfortunately real life (or public perception thereof, thanks to the spread of info/comms post- social media) became so absurd and extreme that them 'shifting gears' has just resulted in the show coming off tamer / less risqué as others have complained

Has the podcast soured anyone else on the show a bit? The later seasons were already really bad, but the podcast is making me sorta dislike what I used to like as well. I stopped listening to it ages ago but I feel the damage is done.

This is the common NPC response when in reality, they just thought it was funny. Overton window shifted on what was PC, from then to now, but they weren’t clutching their pearls over ‘tranny’, they said it and laughed about it.
