I work industrial radiography and its brain dead easy to do, but it takes a lot of time to learn the trade and be good at it. just training your eye to see defects and developing film takes years to be good. A lot of things can go wrong and knowledge of all the different welding types and castings and types of defects takes time to recognize and pick out and if they are relevant to the hundreds of pages of codes for pass/fail. To train someone to do it in a couple weeks or whatever the movie had would be impossible. The astronaut couldnt be expected to do it to save the world. Meanwhile, putting me in some scuba gear would be pretty easy to do. I wouldnt need to know how to fly the ship or land or anything - just get used to zero g and gforce take off. i dont have to know any of the technology or how to fix the ship or if anything goes wrong like an astronaut would.
