Historical movies usually do well with old people and by word of mouth, but this movie in incomprehensible to them.

Vikings have gotten trendy in the last 4 years and Eggers is 2 years too late. If he waited 5 or so years to make this it'd probably be interesting to watch but as of now I have Vikings-fatigue. I saw it yesterday, theater was full to capacity. It was alright. Glad it exists, but it's less than the sum of its parts. Every individual aspect is almost perfect, but then when I watched it I just left with a feeling of, "yep, that was a movie."

It was advertised as cape shitesque Viking movie but it was made by Eggers. That should say enough, if you dont like Eggers previous films you wont like The Northman.

I watched it yesterday and was surprised to see a pretty busy screen. Obviously a very well made, beautiful looking and sounding movie with great performances, overall incredible design and production, but let down massively by a barebones story that makes no effort to get you to like or be interested in its characters. Ironically the only character in the movie who shows any thoughtfulness or morality is the "villain" uncle, who is shown being a wise father and is in a plot twist revealed to have only betrayed his half brother because the queen begged him to. This plot twist and question of was he justified or not was the only depth any of the characters or story presented, and even then it barely explored it. Amleth is a total non-character who only acts because he saw a phantom that told him his fate, Anya Taylor Joy's female lead is a total non-character who only follows Amleth because he thought she was hot and helped her. Even in the end, Amleth is outright wrong in going back to the island, abandonning his newfound family and getting himself killed because "muh fate", with his uncle again being shown in a more positive light than him by simply protecting himself and even succeeding in killing Amleth.

I'll pirate it when it comes out on qbit, but I'm not giving pedowood kikes a dime ever again.

Yes. There is no attempt at historical accuracy anyway, the film is clearly a small scale play-like interpretation of a generic norse saga. No idea where the 70-90 million budget went to apart from CGI in a couple of scenes.
