His idea, which they clearly all agreed with, is that the concept of a movie has a platonic ideal that is already set, and people try to implement it. In Mike's mind, movies aren't something made up by people who are making movies now. How a movie "should go" is not just whether it succeeds on its own terms in an audience or its maker's mind, it is something that is laid down (in stone) by movies from the past.
