I think it's a bloated tv episode trying to mimic the effects of star wars.
Wrath of Kahn is so much better, to the point it and this are night and day and arguably Kahn be considered the first trek film

I downloaded the Director's Cut 4K but it's still streaming only so every source is compressed. Not looking forward to crushed blacks. The Wrath of Khan 4K had the same problem until it came out on disc.

yeah the story is not huge and the main plot is overused but things like the enterprise exterior and spacedock shit actually being interacted with by humans is something the TV show could never incorporate. the actual character story going through spock/bones/kirk and every single side character getting their little feature moments was also kino. illia & decker didn't even bloat the already big cast.
why wouldn't you take the woman who can literally kill you with how good she is at sex and make her a million times bigger?

Roddenberry's directives. Conventional writing would have made him a more villainous character but you got the whole "No Conflict" thing in Star Trek. It's almost subversive of Star Trek itself because Kirk waltzes in almost like a "bad admiral" stereotype you see in Star Trek.
