There really wasn't. In the past America was 90% white, so of course movies catered to 90% of the population, instead of the 10% of negroes. Remember, Hollywood is an American studio that makes primarily films for an American audience, the rest of the world gets them later.
And as soon as the 70's came around, black people were starting to get into films for real, so with demographic changes etc. there are in fact way too many negroes, queers and Jews pr film than is reflected in our current reality.

The media field has for ages been dominated by white straight male POV stories. If you are going to do diversification then that automatically means less white men centered content because that's overwhelmingly what had historically been generated. If your definition of "good diversity" is just keeping white men at the center and giving them a non-white friend or girlfriend then all you really mean is that you want reverse time back to the 90s where you could pretend racism didn't exist because um the white girl in movies always had a black bff as a minor supporting character or Joan Chen occasionally appeared in a shitty B-list movie.

Movies and TV have never been a meritocracy. It's about what studios and executives think makes the product sell. That's why they so often cast some flavour of the month yo-yo in the lead instead of whomever the creator actually wanted to cast but couldn't because they got vetoed. Look at Bruce Campbell, his career is full of doing B-list shit for majority of his career despite being talented guy because executives didn't like him and would veto it when for example Raimi wanted him play Darkman.
