I haven’t watched it much other than the big action scene at the start, what brainwashing chips? Because in the books the Spartans all got psychologically indoctrinated and brainwashed at birth and various chemical drug cocktails to make sure it stuck.

In the show, the Spartans have implanted chips that repress their memories. Rather than Halsey straight-up telling the Spartans "Yeah, we kidnapped you and are going to put you through an experimental process to turn you into super soldiers that has a low survival rate, but it's for the greater good" because she believed that lying to them was a bad idea and that the augmentation procedure was risky enough without added risk from fucking around in their brains, they apparently decided to stick an easily removed memory inhibitor in the Spartans.

yeah in the book as soon as the first set of Covenant showed up it was clear how direr the situation was. Human colonies were getting glassed left and right, and any fleeing ships would just give the Covenant coordinates to a new colony.

The beginning of the show should have been more game of thrones styles, develop the characters of an entire squad, and watch their entire unit get wiped out by Covenant, and just before the last solder dies Chief comes in and turns the tide like Achilles in the Iliad.

In the books, they were told the truth from the beginning along with heavy indoctrination. Some did want to leave and were allowed to go as far as returning only to find out that they were indeed replaced with flash clones and that there was no long any place for them except the spartan program. Most just ended up accepting what happened to them for lack of alternative.
