Can you recommend some? Not very familiar with video art besides Takashi Ito's works.

Gotta have some gimmick.

From any other director I would assume he was trying to insult Pushkin but you really can't expect a serious film with Zulawski. The Blue Note is my favorite but it would be Boris Godunov if it wasnt for this nonsense.

Any Bergman films that tackle the theme of sexual frustration and being tortured by your own primal desires?

Haven't seen those yet. I started watching his films chronologically today and finished À propos de Nice and Taris. Neither did anything for me at all. The former felt like aimless flailing around with a camera with a few nice edits here and there, and the latter was a fairly dull short documentay, with a couple of formal tricks. I'll still watch his latter two works, but these didn't inspire much confidence.

>The liberties taken by the director outraged some opera purists and, first of all, the conductor Rostropovich. The latter sued Zulawski demanding to remove certain visual and sound elements from the film.[5] On January 10, 1990, the Paris Court issued a verdict ordering Zulawski to insert an announcement in the beginning of the film, mentioning Rostropovich's disapproval of the film version. However, the court confirmed that the choice of images and sounds should remain the prerogative of the filmmaker, though some used by Zulawski "could denaturate the appreciation of the work interpreted by Rostropovich."
Zulawski deserved to be sued for what he did with Boris Godunov

Wow. I guess shooting on video isn't as bad as it sounds.
I haven't seen those two, but they don't sound anything like his two other films. I wouldn't judge him until you've at least watched L'Atalante. Zero for Conduct is more hit or miss, but L'Atalante is one of the best films of the 1930s imo
Nolan Scott
based Zulawski
