It's was good when we were teenagers. Impossible to watch it as an adult, you can see how terrible the jokes are etc. I did not even finish it.
I had the same feeling with Californication. My memory of watching it as a teenager was amazing: WHAT A CHAD HANK IS! But in reality he was just an unfunny moron.

It's a good show. It's much funnier than friends. A lot of the middle of the series is just "friends get drunk and do something stupid/wacky (as "wacky" as one can get on a network sitcom) and this is when it's at it's best. the relationship stuff got too fucked up at the end but It's still a top sitcom behind Seinfeld and maybe fraiser if that's your thing.

Seasons 3-6 are the peak. first two seasons are still finding their footing but still some good episodes with some mediocre ones as well.

Wasn't a joke for an entire season that they had a monkey?

Not that they actually wrote jokes around this fact, they just seemed to like repeating that they had a monkey and the writers seemed to think saying the work "monkey" counted as a punchline.

to be fair HIMYM did the same trope except it was for an (meh) episode, but they at least wove the A & B plot together nicely to get the monkey stealing a perverts doll and climbing Teds model empire state building. It was cleverly tied together on otherwise mediocre episode.
