Plan was for Nacho to get capped quick and painlessly by appearing to make a run for it. Mike's role was to snipe Nacho in the case that the Salamanca's managed to capture him alive again instead.

He didn't need to be. Breaking Bad made sense on its own and without any Nacho shenigans. They wanted to explain how Saul met the cartel and how Mike met Gus and Nacho served that purpose and they had to tell a somewhat compelling story instead of just killing him off and leaving a loose thread. But such a character never needed to exist and he's the weakest part of the show

This is actually something I can can behind on certain levels. I watched season 5 a couple weeks ago and it felt like Nacho had a very small part. I was shocked he died in this episode but only because it's the 3rd episode. It had no real impact because it was telegraphed last season. The only twist was that he killed himself.
They wrote themselves into a corner with Nacho. He was pivotal in the first 4 seasons but once Lalo came in he took a backseat.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought of this

Like hat I said above, pretty much what you're saying. Nacho was a character that tied everyone together and then once that was over his character was sidelined pretty heavily. He was phased out pretty consistently once Lalo got involved.
