Northman is not great, and will never rise to that level. This is his first misstep. Good cinematography though.

Witch is fairly standard if not bland A24 fare, Lighthouse is his "up my own ass" movie, Northman strikes the perfect balance between historical accuracy and his experimental/psychedelic sensibilities. I'd say he still runs the risk of leaning too hard into the tryhardiness we know him capable of going forward but given the right framework and approach we also know he's capable of honing it in, it just took 2 other subpar outputs to prove it
