In the game canon, Atriox and the Banished split off from the Covenant several years before the events of Halo CE.
They could change it so that the Banished aren't a thing, but that would defeat the entire point of him being Atriox

The Banished are a meme faction created for a spin off title who are meant to be outcasts from the Covenant but are somehow stronger and smarter then the Covenant. Its truly villain of the week type shit with anything post Halo Reach.

Dislike how they made the plasma shots from covie weapons super fast, like bullets.
In the games, the plasma travels more slowly so that players can dodge it, and it gives them a way to adjust difficulty up and down.
