Anyone who thought this would succeed is retarded there was almost no advertising for this movie and the sparse ads I did see make it look like a made for tv movie. There was nothing eye catching in the ads looked generic as fuck. The marketing makes this look like another netflix tier historical drama show/movie.

Bad marketing along with releasing 5 years too late.
So the marketing campaign was basically "omg it's a Robert Eggers movie!!!! He's soooo great he's like the greatest filmmaker of his generation!!!!!" which anyone with half a brain knows isn't true.
Like, you've got his fanbase on plebbit and his white nationalist fanbase here and that's like 100k people at absolute most but realistically only a fraction of that. Then you've got the people that watched and ejoyed The Lighthouse and The VVitch, which is considerably larger. But that audience are the indie cinephile/pseud audience who like indie dramas. Not large scale action epics. And they certainly don't rate Eggers as the second coming.
Then you've got everyone else. Vikings came out years ago and everyone's kind of over vikings in media now after it rebooted and Assassin's Creed did it. Add on the white nationalist vibes that viral marketers have been pushing, while others are slating it for it, and you're turning off a lot of people.

If you want to make a huge action epic, you've got to make a huge action epic and advertise it as such and try appealing to a large audience. But this wasn't advertised as such and didn't try to appeal to a large audience.

Usually word of mouth circulates too and my co workers browse reddit a lot. I haven't heard a peep from them about this. I liked his last two movies, though, so I'll probably check it out eventually.
