Prequels offered a more refined, more comprehensive vision of the Star Wars universe. The EU was pretty barren before the Prequels came out; they essentially set the groundwork for the entirety of the KOTOR era.

I still think the USS Protostar is a ship that traveled back in time from the 25th century to 2380, where it was given by Starfleet to Captain Chakotay who then got lost in the Delta Quadrant.
People like to say that Prodigy looks like Star Wars, but that Dauntless interior fit the era perfectly. The only explanation is that the Protostar is a ship from the future, probably somehow tied to the Vau N’Akat people.

The prequels fleshed out the universe, but it arguably did as much harm to Star Wars as it did good, if not more. Such as completely changing how Jedis fight. Or fleshing out how the force works too much. Some things are better unexplained. Not to mention, the prequel trilogy did create plotholes in the OT. Such as Han Solo in ANH not remembering the Jedi being a major player in the galaxy.
