i liked that the movie didn't treat itself too seriously and there was a place for such a performance in it
I liked how disgusted and offended he got at the crime photos
>does the iconic eyebrows
ah now I see it's Colin Farrell
The Penguin could have been a better villain. The Riddler is just a poor man's Joker.
People say this was dumb but the World's Greatest Detective not knowing what a URL was almost made me quit watching.
The whole "la rata alada" plot was so fucking stupid. Batman suppose to be smart. How the fuck he doesnt know RATA ALADA is a BAT from day one
>You guys are a hell of a duet here. Why don't you start harmonizing?
It's that he didn't know how to handle genrized words. It was obvious to him the moment he was told that it wasn't El Rata.
Still something Batman should know.
he lets himself be misled by what Alfred says, that "his spanish is not the most perfect", so he just focus on the rata alada
still, it's inexcusable that he doesn't think of Rata Alada being a bat until the end of the movie, that it makes much difference though
*not that it makes much difference
EEEEEEEY EEEYY C'MOOOON WHY YOU GOTTA SHOW ME THAT
>causes a major accident on the highway, surely killing numerous people
>you're free to go lol
what the fuck was this?
brehs...
also Batman doesn't know what social media is because he could have just followed Riddler and figured out the whole plan in 5 minutes
The movie doesn't entirely hold up the more you think about it.
I still don't get how it was supposed to be a big surprise that Falcone was the one who turned against Maroni and took over his operation when they spent the whole movie talking about how Falcone basically runs the city. Batman just assumed it was Penguin because "durr penguins have wings, too!"
the first hour or so is good, once the whole political angle and Catwoman get introduced it starts to fall apart. Riddler being evil because he grew up in a shitty orphanage was retarded.
Hope we get more Penguin in part 2.
>Batman just assumed it was Penguin because "durr penguins have wings, too!"
Gordon says that, not Batman.
It's a pity, Catwoman is so beautiful in this. Maybe not quite Michelle Pfiefer in the 90s beautiful, but closer than the other version got.
But it falls apart the more you think about what happens. He isn't a good detective. Why can he fight 10 gang members and 10 experience mob thugs and cops, but not 4 4-channers? The Batman needed Penguin to solve the mystery for him. And the racial themes were so in your face (white-faced thugs, a half-white faced black man, none of the black characters being bad guys, etc.) that it had to know it couldn't be viewed as a 'movie for everyone'.
The Riddler essentially became the personification of everything Hollywood hates, and that made the portrayal of him much weaker than it could have been if he'd been treated more honestly.
NO HABLA ESPANOL?
the only good thing to come out of this movie is this guy
FU CKING SHIT MO VIE
but seriously
fuck woke batman
but Batman goes along with it
he never stops and thinks about other possibilities
>but Batman goes along with it
Because what else is there in relation to the mob?
I actually liked the Catwoman angle because it sorta leaned into the whole Rome + Juliet tragic romance and made Falcone be this personal villain to Batman, but the movie never fully explore that shit so... i don't know. This movie is a mess.
Penguin was based. Good movie.
he should be the murdered reporter's son, not only it would make more sense, it would tie into the whole father theme that is going on with bruce and selina
the guy's name was even edward and tge big reveal would be that riddler's name would be edward something jr
Falcone, obviously. Penguin was a lowlife lackey to Falcone and everybody knew it. How would it have been possible for him to be the one to rat on Maroni and Falcone, the man established as the most powerful person in the city, keeping him around? Sitting down for 5 minutes to put the pieces together would have been the Batman thing to do.
Makeup was insanely good. Everyone I talked to who didn't already know Colin Farrell was in the movie had no idea that was him or that it was makeup at all. I'm sure the lighting contributed a ton as well.
>he should be the murdered reporter's son, not only it would make more sense, it would tie into the whole father theme that is going on with bruce and selina
I honestly thought that's where they were going with it once the dead reporter was introduced. Maybe Riddler became an orphan after his father was murdered and his name was changed, something like that would have made sense.
A guy literally named 'Falcone', as the movie points out.
Let's be blunt here: in this movie, Penguin is smarter than Batman. It's fine for the Riddler to be smarter. He's supposed to be, only losing consistently due to mental illness and a desire to play games rather than be successful. But the Penguin is only supposed to be shrewd, not smarter.
>Just be one of the 400 people out of the entire internet to follow him
How the fuck does he manage to find something as relatively obscure as that?
they don't establish Falcone as the most powerful man in the city until later, you're either applying your knowledge of the later facts to the beginning of the movie or your preconceived notions about Falcone from the comics
Oh yeah, the effects, make up and costuming for this movie were amazing and deserve an Oscar.
>Penguin was a lowlife lackey to Falcone and everybody knew it.
He was literally Falcones right hand man.
They know he's the crime lord of the city, though. And that he is the primary guy who profited from Maroni being gone.
genuinely an amazing character
Why make the reporter be Hush's father?
Hush, real name Dr. Thomas Elliot, in the comics is a Batman villain that grew up alongside with Bruce Wayne. He's the son of Edward Elliot, that in THE BATMAN movie is the murdered reporter instead of a rich guy friends with the Waynes like in the comics.
The is, why add that shit in the movie for no reason at all? Just for reference sake? To build hype for a sequel/spin-off?
I thought the You Are El URL was kinda clever even tho its silly
Yeah, the brightest part of the movie. This proves that Colin Farrell is not just a pretty face and is genuinely a great actor.
It's a great line...for the audience. But The Batman should have looked deeper. It's not a problem unique to this movie, but it is a problem given that this movie wants to be taken more seriously than the 90s installments.
>Sigh. By the time the term "rata alada" was discovered, Batman already knew that an informant (rat) was the key to all assessinations. He was already looking for the informant/rat. Coulson spelled it for him before dying. The "alada" bit gave him more context for the informant, aka he had to be "winged" in some way.
Batman or bat NEVER made any sense in this context. None. Which is why Batman never gave it any thought. Not even when Pinguin throws it out there. Because Batman knows he himself is not the informant. Obviously.
He goes through people with "winged" nicknames (Pinguin) and eventually settles on the person with a "winged" last name (Falcone).
You cannot take the expression "rata alada" and look at it in vacuum. You have to think about what was happening in the movie (Maroni bust, informant etc) to see whether your solution makes any sense in the context.
reddit dunking on chan again
*sigh* its all so tiresome
I don't know why that was so funny
>AAAEEEEE WHAT ARE YOU SHOWIN ME OHHH HOLY GOD COME OOOOONNNN
him and catwoman were unironically the best parts of the movie, the guy who played Falcone was pretty good too
it's like they're trying to be smarter than the "riddle" is, in that way it's amusing
Holy overthinking, Batman
no they pretty clearly establish him as someone very powerful early on during the memorial service scene
point being, someone who was a rat wouldn't have been kept around unless that someone was someone who couldn't be touched, in this case Falcone
>Batman and Jim Gordon could have found and searched Riddler's apartment just from studying the angle of photos that the Riddler took of the mayor leaving Penguin's club
>Batman and the GCPD could have hacked or at the very least kept an eye on the website the Riddler used to recruit all his followers
>Alfred opening and checking the mail sent to Bruce Wayne was really stupid because it was obvious that was sent by the Riddler
>Batman not knowing Spanish of that a rat with wings meant a bat was really stupid
>Batman thinking a rat with wings could be the Penguin or Falcone was also really stupid
>the la rata alada mystery being just an URL to Riddler's not-Yea Forums website was also stupid
>Batman not knowing that Falcone is the guy that the whole city is working for is also goddamn stupid
Honestly, the movie feels almost like some sort of parody.
We know it's Falcone with hindsight. However accusing the biggest crime lord of being a rat only works if you know for sure he was the rat which Batman didn't know until after he met the Penguin. It's easier to capture the Penguin and rule him out than to go straight to the crime lord and pray you're right otherwise you just got your shit pushed in by a dude who has the whole city by the balls.
I thought it was ok. "El Rata Alada" is something someone who doesn't know Spanish would write. I just thought it was a minor mistake in the film. Glad it served its purpose.
>However accusing the biggest crime lord of being a rat only works if you know for sure he was the rat
Or..., just listen, or... if you are aware that Falcone and Maroni were competing mobsters vying for the control of the city, and that with Maroni out of the picture the only one to profit from the outcome would be... try to guess it, Falcone. Not to mention that the movie make it obvious that the Penguin works for Falcone.
There was nothing indicating it would be a "stool pigeon" either but he thought of it because it's the common association. And the messages were literally addressed to Batman, so if the riddle said "You Are The Winged Rat" why the fuck wouldn't he consider it meant a bat? That's also a common association.
The problem with putting Riddler on film is that if Batman solves the riddles instantly then it's not satisfying to watch, but if he takes any amount of time then the viewer just does backseat riddle-solving and thinks Batman's an idiot when he does solve them.
I liked the detail of him waddling like a penguin with the cuffs on after batman and gordon leave. Reminded me of devito as penguin
informant my nigga these are all common expressions, like the post says, he already ruled himself put as reference, obviously, he was already dead set on narrowing down suspects, one of which he could never be
Did the movie say that Falcone and Maroni are the only 2 crime lords in the city? Selena at the end of the movie says there is going to be a power grab. How can there be a power grab if Penguin is the only high level mobster we know who is still alive? Meaning there are more crime gangs. The whole point of this shit, who cares about the crime world transfer of power, is that the police were on Falcones payroll which they didn't learn until after they got the Penguin.
>It's easier to capture the Penguin and rule him out than to go straight to the crime lord and pray you're right
Why the fuck would his henchman be the rat? Does Batman really thing Falcone is retarded enough to not notice when Penguin not only snitched on Maroni, but also took over the drops business under his nose? Just admit that the script sucks and makes no sense.
lmao that's actually very clever, how did you realize that
We as the audience knew that the Penguin worked for Falcone because we saw them together at the mayor's funeral.
We also know that whoever the rat is ratted out Maroni, who was a competing mobster against Falcone.
The only reason Batman could believe that the Penguin is the rat and is the one selling drugs is if he thought that Falcone "went" legit in the years in between, which is a ludicrous thing to believe.
>Selena at the end of the movie says there is going to be a power grab. How can there be a power grab if Penguin is the only high level mobster we know who is still alive? Meaning there are more crime gangs.
There could be more gangs out there, but none of them is mentioned in the fucking movie.
was just paying attention to him, the movie sort of draws your eyes away to batman but it’s a funny little detail and quite soulful
good eye
thank you
>Why the fuck would his henchman be the rat?
Isn't the rat just someone who has the police under their finger. Correct? Why would a high level leader mobster have that dirt on them if at any point all it takes is a good cop and a year 2 vigilante to take him down? (which is what happens immediately once we found out Falcone is the rat) Personally, I'd rather have one of my subordinates take the fall. Because that is what they do. And as we said Penguin is Falcones right hand man he would help Falcone at least until something happens and then take over (which is also what happens)
>Penguin literally runs the Icebeg Lounge, where Falconey also operates
>Sees them hanging out at the funeral and Penguin acting as Falcone's right hand man and muscle
>Sees that Penguin, Falcone's second man, oversees the drops business left behind by Maroni
>Batman is too retarded to put it together
>the effects
Except all that shit at the end.
They literally accuse Penguin of running it on the side, behind Falcone's back, lol. But nice headcanon.
>We also know that whoever the rat is ratted out Maroni, who was a competing mobster against Falcone.
Honestly why wouldn't you have a lacky do this?
>The only reason Batman could believe that the Penguin is the rat and is the one selling drugs is if he thought that Falcone "went" legit in the years in between, which is a ludicrous thing to believe.
Or he can be ruling out suspects like what a detective does until they know for sure.
>Why would a high level leader mobster have that dirt on them if at any point all it takes is a good cop and a year 2 vigilante to take him down?
Riddler is the one who figures it out, though. He just leaves the clues for Batman to figure out. Then there's some weird tacked on crap about Riddler wanting to flood the city and kill the new mayor just to make him evil. Take that last part of the movie out, leave Riddler a bit more ambiguous and you have a much better movie.
>Honestly why wouldn't you have a lacky do this?
See .
We've seen Penguin be too damned effective and shrewd, with an IQ to match in this movie. He's also damned likable, which is going to be a problem going forward.
But I think they're sticking with 'nightclub owner' Penguin rather than Supervillain Penguin, so it might work.
>They literally accuse Penguin of running it on the side, behind Falcone's back, lol.
is this before or after they captured the penguin
after.
It's obvious the Penguin will take over, since we're getting a spin-off focused sorely on him. I am just responding the user who said that there might be other gangs out there and implied any of them could have ratted out Maroni.
>Riddler is the one who figures it out, though.
Yeah I forgot. Honestly I've lost track of this convo. If anything this just shows how good Riddler is about being an autist
