You can't generalize the concept of "family" like that. I completely agree that you should always try to reconcile with your family, no matter what hardships you go through. The characters in the movie do exactly that and form a stronger bond with each other by learning to understand where the other side is coming from.
But there are families out there who are completely toxic, abusive and who will drag you down with them whenever they can. I know some people who go though some serious shit because it's so hard to escape that environment. If your family consists of terrible people who refuse to do better then fuck them.
