Realistically, I don't think Mariner is capable of true love yet. As a character, her bravado is there to shield a damaged psyche who is desperately afraid of abandonment or loss. In this sense, the Jenspammer who likes /who/ has a type, since the doctor is exactly this way as well.
It's quite reasonable to have an attachment to someone who saves your life under desperate circumstances, especially when emotions ride high because of a recent reconcilation with an estranged parent. Once the endorphins wear off, reality sets in. Love is not possible without vulnerability. This is why I love Keiko and Miles O'Brien. It's a realistic description of a successful marriage. Love is a marathon, not a sprint, and Mariner isn't in it to win it, she's running out of fear.
