When they made Mr. Robot a mental construct was the point of no return. At the end of S2, the plot was already too fantasy, but at the same time the atmosphere, colors and themes were dark and realistic. To add on top of all this, a science fiction story with the machine working and altering reality was too much for the audience to sustain their suspension of belief.

Esmail knew exactly where he was going. That ending was a kino concept when disconnected from everything else, but it was criminally not worth the far superior buildup which came before. He did in one episode what D&D did in one season.
