A similiar concept exist in movies and TV shows, Take Kevin Costner's Robinhood were Morgan Freeman play "Azem", apparantly an arab/moor that followed Robinhood to England after they escaped from a prison in the opening scene. Back then it was just a part of the film, Robinhood being abroad, coming home to see his father's castle burned down and his blinded father living in the ruins, and the only thing he brought with him from abroad was a "bodyguard" who was honour-indebted to Robinhood for saving his life.

Today it would be obvious that the introduction of "azeem" would be of the sole purpose of having a black guy in the movie. Back then this was not the case, the character just fitted the abroad story well and looked cool with a saber rather than a broad sword.

If Robin Hood had come out today they would have made one of the Merry Men black and just pretended it was always this way in medieval fucking England. Freeman's character being black was part of the story, it's explained by Robin fighting in the crusades and actually works since it shows that Robin Hood is honorable and won't kill a defenseless warrior even though they were enemies.
