How was this, as a christkino? I just watched Risen and it was great, so I was looking for another newer film in that time period. My only concern is that in being a new movie, and about a woman, there’s a good chance that it’s woke as fuck.

>Mary actually did all the miracles and Jesus just took all the credit
it was ok, but listen, listen: HOW IS IT ART ??????? JUST BECAUSE IT HAS LE WOMAN AS A MAIN CHARACTER INSTEAD OF JESUS ????? HER STORY IS IMMENSE ALREADY FROM HISTORICAL SOURCES AND MYTH WHY TF DO THEY HAVE TO DO IT REALISTICALLY??? WHAT HAPPENNED TO STORYTELLING AND IMAGERY ????!!! FUCK OFF
Haven't seen this but it looks suspicious to say the least.
I'd recommend you The Chosen. It's a series, not a movie and you can watch it for free online.

I've also heard people saying Zeffirelli's Jesus of Nazareth to be a great movie, so maybe check that out too.
D-do they actually try to do say this?
I’ve heard this is really good! Will check it out! I also heard the History Channel’s Bible series is great, too.
It's surprisingly good, yeah. I have yet to watch anything from the Bible series but the Abraham, Jacob, Joseph ones have been recommended to me.
Wait, this movie doesn’t even try to portray that lmao. It’s basically a movie confirming that she wasn’t the prostitute that the one Pope decided to label her as, and is the Apostle of Apostles that she’s currently recognized as.
Haven’t seen this, but Risen is kino. Good taste, user.
Not a christcuck but it was ok
>didn't watch it
Ye me either, user. Idk why I’m always drawn to biblical film. Shit like Seventh Seal, Silence, the Ten Commandments are all so wonderful.
>basically a movie confirming that she wasn’t the prostitute
I'm glad this 2022 film was able to confirm what she was for us
You're probably too attached to your vices which is why you have a hard time to accept the Lord.
That’s certainly possible, user. Fwiw I am going through the KJV. I told myself this year to actually read the OT/NT for myself.
Yeah this is a uniquely western thing. European Christians never really had this flawed teaching that Mary was a prostitute.
Pope Greg the Great was the one who, several hundred years after the fact, decided to lump several female characters in the text as one character. He wrongfully assumed Mary Magdalene was the same woman who washed Jesus’ feet with her hair.
We also have weird pagan tie-ins. That’s how the famous childish chant, “Hairy Mary Magdalene” came about.
It took until 2016 for the Pope to recognize her day as a day of feast, which is pretty significant. It makes sense that a mere two years after that, that Hollywood chose to capitalize on it.
Sounds good. Don't underestimate how challenging the Bible is to read though. Secondary literature is recommended. Or at least something like the Bible in a Year Podcast by Fr. Mike Schmitz.
On an intellectual level something that had a significant effect on bringing me back to the flock after straying from it during my teenage years was engaging with symbolism. There's an Orthodox guy on YouTube called Jonathan Pageau who does great work on the subject. Not Orthodox myself but I'd still recommend you looking him up.
This is one of his easier to get into videos:

I'd recommend an ESV study Bible. The footnotes and cross references come in very handy. Helped me understand a lot I was missing and see connections I might've otherwise missed.
Do you really think that anything good could come out of this?
We should molecularly annihilate your computer and instead of watching an engine of blasphemy at work pray for the whole world. Imagine the diving face split gore video but instead of one guy it's an entire production team and industry, that'd be the non-surface level equivalent of watching this I think
>I'd recommend an ESV study Bible
Any specific recs?
I quite like Pageau! Jordan Peterson brought Introduced me to his works. Also, listening to his biblical lectures really kickstarted my fascination with Christianity.
I agree. I have the physical KJV to pore over, and the Bible app, which is quite effective as it gives me daily tasks to read, has narrators if I want to listen, and allows for seeing translations side by side for comaprison.
Screencapped for future reference. Appreciate it, user!
Those are movies that I would call Christian or heavily influenced by Christian themes/characters. If you just want Biblical kino, here's a refined list:
The Ten Commandments (1923)
The King of Kings (1927)
The Ten Commandments (1956)
King of Kings (1961)
The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965)
The Last Temptation of Christ (1988)
"Where's God When I'm S-Scared?" (1993)
Dave and the Giant Pickle (1996)
Josh and the Big Wall (1997)
The Prince of Egypt (1998)
Esther... The Girl Who Became Queen (2000)
Joseph: King of Dreams (2000)
King George and the Ducky (2000)
Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie (2002)
The Passion of the Christ (2004)
The Nativity Story (2006)
Son of God (2014)
Risen (2016)
Mary Magdalene (2018)
Paul: Apostle of Christ (2018)
Here's an Amazon link. If you want one with a fancy leather cover, you can pay more, but this has all the same information. The ESV is nice because it has an essentially literal translation which reflects the original texts, but then the study notes help you understand what might be poetic or figurative and such.

Nice, ty user.
>Bible app
I also recommend this. If something in one translation confuses you, see how other translations put it. Also, having daily readings at your fingertips is nice. They also have "read the Bible in a year" type plans with guided readings and devotions.
Is Son of God the movie version of the Bible series?
Shorter movie list but those are the ones I thought were genuinely good.
The Passion of the Christ
The Passion of Joan of Arc
Braveheart
Hacksaw Ridge
The Prince of Egypt
Joseph King of Dreams
Ostrov
Potop
Excalibur
The Tree of Life
Apocalypto
I think is a beautiful film. And I miss so much Johan Johannsson.
Thanks anons.
honestly i liked it, just watched it on sunday.
of course there are some "modern" takes, like mary magdalene being le strong woman and black apostles.
however it doesn't feel shoehorned in and fits the theme of a woman-centered christian film.
i really liked the performances by roonroon and phoenix. cinematography was also really nice in some parts.
Any good daily sermons on YouTube that aren't two hour long rambles
Not daily but very good Sunday Sermons.

Second bishop Barron, he also has The Church on Fire Bibles with extracts from theologians which are perfect beginner bibles.
The word on fire, not church kek
>Catholic
Yikes
>recommending The Prince of Egypt
Cringe. Reminder that the Exodus never happened and it was unironically just a Jewish fanfic like pretty much all of the (((Old Testament))).
>denomination worrier
It’s all Christ at the end, user.
Sorry, bro but I'm not going to engage.
Completely wrong.
modern christians are embarrassing. i’m not religious and i’ve never met someone with more biblical knowledge than me except a priest i knew in college.
>Braveheart
If you're gonna have that, you also need Outlaw King on the list. Religion plays a significant role in the film.
Not really. Braveheart was made by a Christian and features Christianity excessively both in text and subtext. The same can't be said for Outlaw King.
So the Da Vinci Code was right about Mary Magdalene and 20 years after it was published the mainstream Christian community finally accepts that Mary Magdalene was one of Jesus' apostles and not a prostitute?
>no Quo Vadis
s m h
t b h
f a m
>most prominent saint
>a woman
menbros...
this same person will believe Rameses II's propaganda stele about his "victory" over the hittites lmao
I didn't think it was bad at all but I'd cram it in with something like Ben Hur, El Cid or The Agony and the Ecstasy. Pretty good but still missing something. Maybe I'll change my opinion after a rewatch, dunno.
>Excalibur
Not really a Christian movie. But if you want a good vs evil movie involving magic on both sides, Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe and LOTR both hit closer to Christianity.
>Apocalypto
Definitely a great movie, but not really a Christian movie. It condemns the pagan religion of the city, but says nothing about the pagan religion of the village.
No you got history a little messed up, user.
This was first recognized by Pope Paul VI, who removed the identification of Mary Magdalene with Mary of Bethany, as well as the “sinful woman” back in the 60s.
It wasn’t until 2016 that Pope Francis elevated her status to what it ought to have been.
Dan Brown published the Da Vinci Code in 2003, and I’m pretty sure one of the big conspiracy theories it tries to allude to was that there was an overt romantic relationship between Jesus and Mary, which is still not confirmed and is perceived as blasphemous.
>2022
>still no Bible cinematic universe directed by Mel Gibson
Why?
I'll second Bishop Barron even though I'm a protestant. I'll add Alistair Begg.

Narnia and LotR are both Christian and Excalibur is based on Le Morte d'Arthur. What are you even talking about?

It's better than The Robe, Demetrius and the Gladiators, Barabbas, and The Silver Chalice, but all of those are worth watching as well
Great links, user. Thank you!
its written by two atheist lesbians and it shows. I couldn't finish it.
There is still beauty in their vision.
Aranofsky’s Mother! Is an interesting vision, which to the layman shows her mother earth and it’s one big anti-religious schlock fest, when in actuality it seems to make more sense that she is a sympathetic Miltonian Satan, so we’re told the tale entirely from her perspective.
Jesus of Nazareth is pure Christkino and has an outstanding cast as well
bishop barron is a modernist deceiver who thinks no one goes to hell
you may as well listen to james martin
>>most prominent saint
the most prominent saint is the Theotokos, and far behind her is St. Joseph
>ortodox
I just didn't see the point because I felt they ruined Mary's arc and Joachim's interpretation of Jesus was very meh.
granted, I didn't finish it so maybe the third act has some redeeming qualities
>bishop barron is a modernist deceiver who thinks no one goes to hell
>you may as well listen to james martin
I don't think that is what he claims. I think what he claims is that there is reason to be hopeful. Comparing him to James Martin is vile.
