It's the closest we'll get to his directors cut. At this stage it's not even a fan edit it's the definitive version of the film.

I did not get filtered hard, I understand where the film went right and where it was deficient. Lynch's Dune is the kind of movie that promises something interesting, and you can overdose on that promise and imagine what was on the screen was kino.
I've seen both the theatrical and extended editions multiple times, although I haven't yet seen the Spicediver cut. Maybe it actually delivers on the promise, I'd be interested to find out.
But none of that is to say that the original cut is "good", not even close. Although the film takes a nosedive at the end, there were issues throughout the film. It is a bad film.
Even aside from studio meddling, I think Lynch stuck too close to a source material he wasn't passionate about. He should have used it as a jumping off point to tell a story he was interested in.

Comfy movie, I saw it in 35 mm recently and was surprised at how much I enjoyed it despite the final 40 minutes or so feeling really rushed.

Nope, it's a great spiritual kino telling the dark story of a messiah who manipulates a group of people into giving him power but he's also a good man trying to do his best in the world. The Spicediver cut has a scene with Thurfwir at the end that is more emotionally resonant than any scene in any adaptation.

the issues with Dune 1984 is that the book is unadaptable and overrated, with all kinds of halfassed ideas and illogical worldbuilding that fans think is genius. much of the ideas in the book have been improved by other writers and so will never work well on film (e.g. lightsabers are a better reason to swordfight in sci-fi than any convoluted shit with shields and lasers and slow blades).

Lynch did the best movie-length version of the story anyone ever will.

Well, to be fair, including a bunch of shit in Dune '84 that was unecessary, like the way FTL travel works, didn't help. Spice works just as well being a macguffin like Unobtainium. The books weren't THAT unadaptable if you don't feel like you need to include everything.

Pretty sure the studio was responsible for all the whispered internal dialogue. That's half of the shittiness of the film right there. Unlike some people, I don't think the time skip at the end of the film was a dealbreaker. It's the 80's and you're gonna get a montage every now and then.

but the essence of the first part still is there (and Paul's anguish already present)
the end is fine (Dune will indeed be terraformed, and I don't see the problem with representing it like so, if there has to be a single movie)
plus the aesthetic is fucking prime, and no adaptation ever came close (villeneuve's dung is fucking ugly, and it's not just the photography: the kraut biker suits are laughable as fuck)
