The best I can think of is Dark Water and Ringu

kairo too

check out jacobs ladder and mouth of madness

I played through SH 1-3 as action games, you get cool kickass melee weapons which makes cutting through enemies a joke. As soon as I got the fireaxe I butchered each and every nurse in the hospital, I had tons of excess ammo and healing items. Good times.

The Cellar 2022

They did the silent hill aesthetic and sound scares very well

mostly the J-horror stuff from the 90s and 00s, also David Lynch

For me its

Good one.

>natural color palette, no heavy color grading

What else

Ideally a unique, memorable soundtrack but that's asking a lot for movies today.

I always look back on that bit at the beginning of sh1 as perfect horror. The part where you awaken in the foggy town and you see your daughter wander into some alley way. Something about that quick progression from a mere creepy alley to a bloody, rusted entrance to hell was really frightening.
But above all I think was the sound. The pounding getting louder as you traverse the alley and that horrible creaking metal. Good sound is imperative for good horror.

There is nothing I hate more in a horror movie than the cheap "suspenseful silence" to open up a quick jumpscare that's accompanied by a sudden loud startling sound. It is so lazy, clichéd and frightens only children and women. Good sound is something few horror films ever get right

slow, subdued atmosphere, setting is a city or some other place that appears to be abandoned

Should I give SH4 another chance? I tried playing it a while ago and it just felt so different compared to the previous 2, like just really janky and awkward to control

the Silent Hill movie has great atmosphere no cap

Yes the horror taking place in the real world, or world that looks like ours but corrupted

do you even watch movies, OP?

>Good sound is something few horror films ever get right
again, I'm curious as to what kind of horror movies you are watching, because some of my favorite horror movies use sound in the exact same way you're talking about Silent Hill.

SH4 is the best of the original quadrilogy, and you're a tasteless pleb if that game didn't suck you in immediately

blindly aping the source material does not make a good movie.

It's a little too polished and clean but probably the closest Hollywood can get

thanks user

better than it any right to be

it's in my top 5 video game movies. pretty decent all around. the cult leader bitch is a great psychopath-type actress

>some of my favorite horror movies use sound in the exact same way you're talking about
Post some. I rarely watch nu-horror anymore, after teenage girls became the mainstream market, but occasionally there's a decent gem that slips through.
But don't you dare post any a24 shit or I will fuck your skull

i used to be in love with this actress.

dark water

Yes. Underneath the jank game mechanics I think it has one of the strongest silent hill storylines ever. SH2 is arguably the best, but the idea of characters being drawn to silent hill because of some psychological trauma has been reused so much at this point. SH4 is a completely fresh and interesting take on silent hill, even with Henry being the most flat character ever. Walter is great though, he's sympathetic and has goals that make sense and not just 'im le evil for no reason'. You gotta play it user. Remember not to use any healing items until the second half starts.

how'd it work out for you guys?

Not true, everything is so bright

I laughed out loud when the cult gave her that lantern because "you need it" and then when she enters the final hospital dungeon everything is so bright red lmfao

Hush, Alien, Irreversible, The Innkeepers, basically anything David Lynch, The Shining, A Quite Place, Climax is an A24 film but i don't count that as one since it's just more Gaspar Noe fuckery, and those are just off the top of my head. Aliens sound design is so next level and horrifying that Dead Space basically ripped off it's entire design. curious as to watch kind of horror movies you're watching where the sound design isn't a critical aspect of the movie

5 stars out of 10, kys

I said they did the SH aesthetic very well not that it was a good movie, faggot

One of the best video game movies in my opinion. It's clear that the man who made this really loved Silent Hill and wanted to show to others why it's so great. I'll say the weakest part of it was including Piramid Head due to him having no place anywhere outside of the 2nd game, but they at least gave him a cool new shape of his helmet and it's not like Silent Hill series is also not guilty of overusing him. I even liked parts with Sean Bean because he is an engaging actor and I did like that idea of Silent Hill being just an empty ruin for those who were not drawn to it. It also had one of the best endings a Silent Hill movie could have (let's all just ignore the awful sequel).

Yeah i agree. Great movie and they did whatever they could to make it work. The script needed another go, maybe and i bet any faults the movie has can be attributed to the studio.

>(let's all just ignore the awful sequel).
good god that's one of the worst movies i've ever seen without a doubt. it's baffling how bad it is.

God you have shit taste

The first act of this is fantastic. By the second you have a pretty good idea of where it's going, by the third you're annoyed that they've yet again ruined what could've been a legitimately decent film by making it completely predictable with by-the-numbers political talking points. Is worth watching, though. Great sound design, if memory serves.

Silent Hill 1 is much better. 2 was a downgrade in enemy variety, resource management and scare factor. Bosses are worse too

I love those two

The scene where she’s running from the little baby monsters and they play the metallic scraping noises really creeped me out. For me it’s definitely sounds

that fucking siren

>Silent Hill 1 is much better. 2 was a downgrade in enemy variety, resource management and scare factor. Bosses are worse too
Brainlet contrarian.
Nobody cares about combat in SH games.
Resource management in particular is completely irrelevant in 1, once you find the pickaxe it's game over and you can literally do the final boss just standing still shooting while chugging healing items.
Bosses in 2 are much better when it comes to visual design and thematic relevance, not to mention a greater visual variety in environments, better score, story and pacing (so fun crossing those dogshit sewers TWICE!).
