Originally it was supposed to mean that you can't run away from your past. Derek imprinted anger and hatred on his little brother and he paid for it. Danny dying was, supposedly, a punishment for Derek. The movie was supposed to end with Derek shaving his head to represent the neverending cycle but Edward Norton didn't like it.

The problem is that the movie is really bad conveying its message (at least from what the producers told the press). At least what I got from the movie is that we are all alone. Everybody will use us for their own interests and agendas and that will never lead to anything good.
