While a 9/11 reference would’ve been pretty on the nose, from what’ve seen of the film there doesn’t seem to be that much linking it to the early noughties besides that everyone doesn’t have a smart phone. Otherwise, most of the pop culture references felt tailored to zoomers, rather than late late millennials (notably the flossing dance)

the conflict of the plot is a girl has a slightly but not too controlling mom, her grades go from As to B+s, and she turns into a creature that socially benefits her in every way.
