All Maris ever did was put Niles down and make him feel worthless. If anything Mel is the anti-Maris, since she fixed a lot of the damage Maris did to him. If it weren't for Mel, Niles would have never worked up the courage to propose to Daphne in the first place.
Daphne isn't really good or bad for him as such, she just happened to be the target of a "love at first sight" experience. Niles himself would warn people that this is just a projection of one's idealized opposite, given that he's a Jung specialist.
