If you're not a Sonic-faggot you won't understand this, but Sega actually admitted they intended to release the game a few years back but delayed it for quality control. They actually brought on the comic guy to write the story after YEARS of demand, and the gay dude who ran the twitter account is serving as a creative consultant, to relay to the team what Western audiences want in a Sonic game

Sega's revived niche shit like Alexx Kidd, Streets of Rage, and even fucking Panzer Dragoon, because they say they're ashamed of their past and now aim to please fans. This is the big deal because for the longest time it was all blamed entirely on Sonic Team, whereas now they're like "Yeah we fucked up, and we're sorry. Quality>Quantity from now on for Sonic, so yeah this shit is gonna take some time"

That happened in the 75th anniversary issue of the Archie Sonic comic, if I remember correctly. If Carrey refuses to return as Robotnik for Sonic 3, they could go this route for Robotnik in the film.
