What happened to Mark Brendanawicz?

He was neither zany nor kooky so the writers made him Brendanaquit

he didn't seem funny or personable either

He was the straight man. The writers decided they didn't want one.

When does the show truly jump the shark? I finished s3 a few days ago and have been holding off on s4

he seemed too sleepy and sleazy to be the straight man

when Rob Lowe leaves

Remember this show shared writers with The Office. They clearly had no idea how to write this kind of character. In P&R they got rid of him. In The Office it was Ryan who was the straight man/ audience stand- in. Ryan should have disappeared after he got promoted, but he was one of the writers and didn't want to cut himself out, so they brought Ryan back as a caricature.

Andy outgrowing him and thus making him expendable. That, and Mark not being memorable and particularly likeable.

He had too many reprimands in his file, so he was let go. He moved to Indianapolis where he found work with a company developing tract housing in communities across the state. For years he travelled around Indiana, pushing for zoning variances and other favors his employer needed to get their projects completed. After handing out one too many bribes, he was arrested on corruption charges, convicted, and served a five year sentence in state prison. After his release, he was on supervised parole for ten years. During this time he lived with his parents and volunteered at Habitat for Humanity as required for his community service hours. One night after drinking with some of his fellow laborers, he ended up in a car wreck on his way home. He did not survive.

boring characters like this should at least be attractive

I thought he was, like, killed by a tooth monster that manifested from a TV show he remembered watching as a kid.

His lowest moment was when the writers, for reasons unknown, decided to pair him up with the other humorless husk that is Ann something that Chris Pratt was fucking at the beginning. That combination of nothing was so fucking weird to watch on-screen.

I would've tweeped and malwaed all over shauna too

They failed to make him Jim 2

I honestly really liked him. I thought it was kind of shitty that they didn't use or even reference the plans he put together for the park when they finally made it.

Maybe because he left so little an impact on people's lives that him leaving was inconsequential.

he was boring

i thought he was funny in a deadpan way, and i like how he became less of a douche after he hit his head

i'm watching season 2 right now and he just doesn't seem funny

he just seems like a guy who is around the real cast sometimes

Yeah, this pissed me off too. I wonder if there was bad blood when it was all done because there was a moment when Leslie brings up ex boyfriends and doesn’t even include him.

His lack of energy and enthusiasm also just makes him a really off-putting guy.

They needed to do something else with him since the show already had an audience stand in: Jim.

Apparently according to Michael Schur, he was supposed to be a depiction of what happens when professionals in the public sector are often sent between places to work in various areas. The original vision was for him to reappear on occasion and then leaving again for other assignments, but I guess the actor wasn't interested in making cameos.

He was so boring and forgettable they forgot to include him. It's mentioned on the commentary.

i mean he definitely was a bit of a satellite character, he didn't even work for parks. i also liked his dynamic with ron, he was one of the only characters that was like on equal footing with him

Ron was also kinda different in the beginning. He had the same traits and opinions, but he seemed to be more content in his position rather than actively trying to dismantle the public sector and acted more like Leslie's boss. They just ramped it up slightly.

What dynamic? He occasionally interacts with Ron in a low-energy, monotone way butt that's about it.

the biggest example is the episode where he helps ron get his garage to code, he doesn't take any of ron's shit and it's great

April and Andy were 19 and 28. How did twitter allow this outrage!?

They literally said “the character we made was so boring we forgot to include him”?

They wrote him out of the show when they stopped trying to be The Office and didn't need a Jim around anymore.

Andy was hard on himself enough about it, understandably so.

That's not really much of a dynamic, the same role could have been done by a nameless city inspector. Mark himself just seems vacant most of the time.

ok dude you don't like him i get it

It's just funny I remember this coupled being lauded all over imgur/reddit/tumbler/twitter and the same people probably have to hate them now.

ok dude you like him i get it

I actually liked Mark. I needed someone that didn’t act like a cartoon character, especially later in the series

>That's not really much of a dynamic, the same role could have been done by a nameless city inspector. Mark himself just seems vacant most of the time.

this

Season 4 is still pretty good quality, not until 5 when the cracks really start to show iirc, but even then I think there were still some really good episodes. 6 is when it really starts to dip in quality hard

It was nice in the later seasons when they made it a joke that she had zero personality or anything going for her except looks

It's genuinely amazing to me though how unfunny she was. I'm 99.9% sure that not a single joke she made made me smile. But for some reason Leslie eats her gash for every meal and would gladly donate her kidneys to her.

imo she had maybe 5 jokes land the whole show. mark had more than that in just 2 seasons

Ann was such a horrible character and seriously had nothing to do. I remember I almost dropped the show when there was an episode devoted to Ann trying to become friends with April by just hanging out with her all day. Why the fuck would give her the urge to do that

Yeah I remember not hating Mark and I'm pretty sure he got into funny situations at least once. At least he was funnier than Ann.

i wouldn't say it ever gets unwatchable/outright bad, just not as good. the last season is a timeskip and i know some people hate when shows do that

Anne was so fucking terrible I don't know why they kept her around for so long

Because Ann has no purpose and barely a personality to speak for, so the writers desperately try to do whatever with her. Leslie gives her a public sector job just so she has an excuse to be at City Hall at all.

I stopped watching a while ago out of boredom, but I heard they basically ruin Ron's character and the whole dynamic he has with Leslie over their different opinions on politics and the role of government.

i don't think that's true, he quits government and starts his own company and steals potential government projects. he doesn't come back at the end or anything

He said he was fine with coming back as cameos, but he was never invited.

For me it wasn't the fact they they time skipped, but they kept forcing horrible "guys I can't believe it's x year and [insert wacky unrealistic pop culture reference]!" Just really really lazy and uncreative writing

Not like the fans were screaming for the return of Dan Brendanawhatever.

Did anyone else really resent this guy for getting to fuck Leslie? I know it happened before the first episode and none of this is real but she's such a goddess and he didn't even enjoy it. RIP in piss

I remember how genuinely surprised I was when I went to see Sonic 2 and only then realized that Sonic was voiced by Jean fucking Ralphio

They didn't know what to do with him. They wrote him as some Chad / Jim type of character who was banging randos all the time. But then realised that generally he wasn't the ladys man type, and as the show got more silly, he was too grounded. So they removed him.

Basically after that Ben is basically Nu-Mark. He even has a small arc where he leaves for the private sector, which Mark was supposed to have.

It wasn't realistic for Mark and Leslie to be a pair, so they created Ben.

Also always thought it was bizarre/a real snub that he was never spoke of again, literally unpersoned from the series. A series that loves to reference itself and random characters constantly. I like the actor when he was in Channel Zero, maybe the people thought it was a snub when he went to do indie stuff.

Leslie's a slightly less frumpy and old Hillary Clinton, a woman she admires for some fucking reason.

>They wrote him as some Chad / Jim type of character who was banging randos all the time. But then realised that generally he wasn't the ladys man type
I thought the joke with that was that this is what passes for a lady's man in Pawnee.

Ben was also far more likeable than Mark. Besides the retarded nerd reference shit and characters making fun of him for being a nerd, he was far more enjoyable.

I'm watching this show now and she definitely seems like the least thought out character. I don't know the timeline with The Office, but I assume they wanted her because of her popularity in that show but then despite being slapped all over the promos, she's really no more than a secondary character after the pilot season

I believe Parks and Rec was originally conceived as a spinoff for The Office and she was going to reprise here role from that. But they decided to make it its own thing somewhere along the line

She started off strong what with her having a genuine grievance and being this disillusioned woman with a drooling retard gimp boyfriend, but then they kinda just left her in there even though besides the park she's almost useless and sticks out of the entire grouping.

she just liked powerful women. she had a thatcher picture too I think though obviously she's more aligned with hilldawg

that jew is really in everything.

The scenes where she wants to rape Joe Biden are so fucking weird too.

Ben was definitely a better character, and filled the straight man niche too, I don't disagree there. If Mark had to leave to make room for Ben then so be it. Still sticks out that they go out of their way not to reference Mark ever.

Maybe they just didn't feel like bringing back such an unpopular character. Maybe if he had been around for longer and, y'know, done something maybe his character would have more of a claim to being acknowledged.

Yeah, that was the original plan. I wonder what would have happened if they actually did. Crazy pregnant Karen the show, which cameos from the office gang!

Does Yea Forums like this show?

this, she just looked up to literally every woman who'd gained a position of power. that was like her core thing. she wasn't a partisan hack about it, she had condoleeza right next to hillary iirc

The problem with that is they bring back characters who had one scene, just to be like "MEMBER THIS GUY?" etc. He didn't even get a "remembrance" box with Ann, or they never did anything with his park picture. It just makes it seem like it was a personal thing.

kek would've been better if they got Bill for that

The actor was in the first season of Channel Zero, what else has he been in?

I do

Some indie stuff mostly. You can probably find the stuff he's been in on Piratebay or something.

I liked him in Channel Zero. I think he did some indie flicks when he left Parks and Rec.

thanks for the repetition. we've already gone over multiple instances where it would have been natural to mention him itt

The only other thing I remember him from is The Assassination of Jesse James, he had a decent role in that. Apparently he was in Tales from the Loop as well, haven't see that but it's supposedly a really good show that's been on my list for a while

i only watched it last year but i thought it was preddy good for the most part

I'm illiterate, I just scream my thoughts onto the Internet and it vanishes.

I actually quite liked Mark. He was a bit boring, but he's a straightman - not everyone needs to be a weird annoying freak
