Pirates weren't necessarily any stupider than the average sailor, many would have started out as regular people from various walks of like. Norrington's story for example would have happened a lot: some Navy toff gets press-ganged on shore or captured at sea and basically enslaved by pirates, then once he's on board and forced to work for the pirates he is a pirate, and he can either stay as a pirate, or be executed for piracy.

The accent may make them sound dim but don't forget that's a totally invented thing that came from the 1950 movie Treasure Island.

It's not a meme, it's cuba libre. Whiskey tastes bad anyway. Not that pure rum doesn't either, in general I don't get the appeal of alcohol. Tastes like shit, makes less in control and you vomit and or get hangover.
