WCW put pressure on WWF/Vince to actually put out a quality product. WWF ratings tanked after Hogan until Attitude Era and immediately went to shit after they bought their competition.

Closest I ever got to seeing WWF sort of stuff was Lucho Libres in Mexico. It was legitimately amazing and I of course didn't know enough spanish to process much in specifics, but it was so theatrical I could pretty much get the "roles" everyone was playing. And then some of the moves they did was legitimately closer to acrobatics or gymnastics than say boxing or MME.

It just meshed well with the zeitgeist at the time. The 90s was a time to move away from the over vibrant and poppy 80s. Wrestling really captured that grungy counter culture feeling. You can also add in how you had 2 major companies competing for the best show, and all the gossip lead to people talking about what would happen next.

The drug probably helped out during those times too. You pretty much had roided rockstars traveling on a weekly basis together.

For WWF it was Vince putting himself into the storyline, dude made a genius decision to embrace publicly being the villain after the Montreal screwjob. For WCW it was convincing Hogan to flip and go heel and Sting to go Crow. Then they both drug out the storylines too long, all tease with diminishing payoffs.
