Also, if you think there wasn't anyone who WANTED WW1 you are mistaken. A lot of people were looking forward to it. Mostly because they didn't know how modern war would play out and thought they would march into some heroic battle, rather than into mustard gas and artrillery fire.

Dunno. Merkel never really struck me as evil. She actually seems to have quite a conscience, and a lot of her political actions came from a point of well-meaningness. She just happened to be a quite skillful politician at the same time - which can lead to actions one can consider somewhat evil. She is notorious for her pawn sacrifices that kept her hands clean from any kind of scandal.
Really, her biggest mistake was causing almost two decades of stagnation, titling it as "stability", and ultimately making our economy dependent on Russia way too much.

The germans were motivated to do this primarily out of a feeling that time was right for war and they were especially afraid of what an industrializing russia might be able to achieve in just a few years
