I was riding the Chicago subway the other week and this white billybob looking guy came up to me and started saying "You some kinda JOURNALIST?" because I was reading a book about restorative justice and its relation to ethics and representation in the media (recommended to me by a mentor and friend at my alma mater, a professor emeritus of community development and social services), and when I just shook my head at him and wouldn't respond he started pushing me and grabbing at my book, and pretty much every POC on the train immediately saw what was about to happen, got up to help me, and pushed the loser off at the next stop. I've never felt more inspired. We have a lot of work to do in this country but this just shows that when good people stand up, the bad ones don't stand a chance.
