first generation slants are bursting to tell this weird unrelatable ethnic story and now that they've got a taste, they're not going to stop.
whenever one of these foreigners proudly dumps their exotic niche non-sequiturs on the market, I'm forcibly reminded of "that guy" who would show you youtube videos in school while anxiously looking back and forth from your face to the screen waiting for you to crack up.
The movie is bad but there are enough ricecels on this board who are ready to die on this hill.
It's off-putting, unrelatable and badly animated.

It was alright, something like 6 or 7/10. I liked the visuals but honestly Mei and her friends annoyed me. Mei started off as too much of a goody-two-shoes, her friends have fuck-all for agency and feel like a forced unrealistic support group, and their struggle was to see some soulless boys band. They're too fucking lame and nice for me to relate desu, that's much more of a problem than her being an Asian girl was.

I can't be the only one who sees the similarities.

As a white European I don't think rebelling against an overbearing parents
is THAT unrelatable. Hell Disney's done variations on that theme since forever. That's the weird part to me, that this is the thing that people chose makes this movie underwhelming.

It was good. Not classic pixar good but a decent 7/10, which is nice coming from modern pixar. Lots of things I loved, like Mei and her group, somethings I didnt, like the bully kid which kinda does nothing but act like a plot device. It really did feel more focused on telling a story only a certain group of people would enjoy, that being 1st generation asian kids and teenage girls, but I think for such a story they pulled it off well that even some dope on Yea Forums like me enjoyed it.

The mc is a girl, but she likes white boys so that might take away points. Her friend group is pretty diverse but it is toronto canada, and like Mei they also like white boys so eh. There is a black kid who has a somewhat prominent role but hes kinda an antagonist but he might be gay since he likes the boyband the girls like, so theres that. The story is about defying your parents but the mom is very controlling, asian parents yada yada so… Probably the biggest woke thing is the 3 niggers and the korean in the boyband, that is straight up some “diversity is our strength” bullshit. All in all, some woke things but nowhere near woke enough for people like us.

As a white American who was born in the 80s, there absolutely were white parents not too dissimilar from the so-called Asian tiger moms, the term was helicopter parents. I grew up mostly around whites and Asians and honestly didn't see a huge difference between the parenting styles of the studious white kids and studious Asian kids (save for Asian parents sending their kids to Chinese language classes). White parents were arguably "worse" in some regards, as they were more likely to volunteer in their kids' class, so the kids could never really get away from mom.
