I like how the series somehow had more time dedicated to tournaments than DB, but it felt more naturally presented.

A lot of its praise comes from people reading way too much into the lore. Way more than the author intended. He just liked the christian imagery.

I enjoyed it as a whole but the ending is pretentious and all the characters are unlikeable. Aesthetics and animation hold up today, though.

I watched it when I was a teenager and I liked it. I wasn't a film guy back then, though. I don't really feel like rewatching it anytime soon.

It did the same thing that lots of anime does, it mistakes obscurantism for intelligence, so characters repeatedly hide their true actions and motivations, often multiple times, for no other reason than because it being confusing will make the audience think that it's being really clever. Eventually it wraps itself in so many contradictions that the story becomes nonsensical, so the writers ditch the story entirely and reach for some pseudointellectual nonsense they can pretend is symbolic (and will have the army of autistic fans defending it by arguing that if you don't like it you don't get it largely as a deflection from the fact they don't get it either) while pretending that it's a character study even though the characters have spent most of the show flip-flopping in their characterisation to meet the whims of the story.

Also, shinji is a whiny pathetic cunt which explains why your average user identifies deeply with him.
