I'm a fairly big movie director and I can tell you all that no director has complete control over a big budget movie. Everything you try to do is run over producers and if they don't like it you've got to fight them, the whole production is like this. In the end you win some you lose some, no big budget film isn't like this.

I think it's implied they kept sending it back to get recut because Eggers said that he was so relieved when they finally said it was ok. That's when he said he would never do it again

I would be extremely surprised if any of them have been told no for anything by a studio any time recently. It's probably similar to how people almost never fail out of Harvard - the kind of people that get there in the first place don't generally exhibit qualities that would put them in that position in the first place.
