The Victorians dabbled in "corpse medicine," performed hysterectomies on "hysterical" women put in asylums by husbands who wanted younger women, and sent homeless orphan children from the streets of London to colonies, where they were exploited as agricultural labor and servants. We're all fucking savages and only God can save us.

As someone who can read both chinese and japanese it's pure propaganda. Chinese translations of japanese apologies have a serious word replaced with a flippant one to make it seem insincere to the Chinese population, they bitch about textbooks being edited when they use the word "advance" instead of invade, or replace graphic depictions of violence in the books aimed at 13 year olds.
They only did this since the 90s because after Tiananmen square they wanted an external enemy for propaganda purposes while the country shifted to a more aggressive and authoritarian mode, while Japan and China previously had a good relationship before that, including a lot of aid for China's development. So those reparations have already been paid plenty.
It's literally propaganda aimed at winning over public perception and justifying Chinese hostility. They'll ask for endless apologies without ever intending to accept any (the same shit that they do with colonialism in white countries).
On the other hand, the real redpill is that Japan secretly likes this, because they can use it to build up their military and push public perception back in favour of completely repealing article 9 and letting them have a fully fledged military again, which they basically already have in all but name. Both sides are using this as propaganda to reshape their countries.
