The Quran says in surah 4, verse 6, that orphaned children must not receive their inheritance until they reach the "age of marriage" and "maturity." This makes a clear distinction between childhood and adulthood. A child cannot receive their inheritance, an adult can. A child cannot marry, an adult can.

What was a child and what was an adult in the Arab world? It's likely that, as in other places in the world, the age of adulthood was a bit lower--maybe at age 16 or 17. But what isn't at all possible is for children to coincide with the age of marriage.
