What's a good translation for Anna Karenina?
What's a good translation for Anna Karenina?
Your pic is the one I used and u thought it was pretty damn good, but I don't know Russian or other translations.
Maude is the go to for Tolstoy, although Garnett is serviceable enough.
Why did Lev reject this and his other major work (W&P) in later life? Was it a sincere condemnation or something artificial? I remember he says that the only two good stories he ever wrote were "God Sees The Truth, But Waits" and "The Prisoner of the Caucasus" which he claims are good because they depict universal human truth/experience without excess (i.e the artistic pretentiousness that he claims pervades his novels). I've read them both. They are excellent stories but hardly can be considered his best. Father Sergius, for example is far superior in my opinion. So why? Was it just an affectation of old age? Trying to come to grips with his own coming death? A bizarre manifestation of his own ego?
I was under impression he consider Anna Karenina his only and best novel. Unless he rambled something on his death bed he can safely dismiss.
Fuck women
Fuck aristocrats
Fuck society
Farm crops, get money, fuck bitches
Maude > Dunigan > Magarshack
>Fuck women
>Fuck bitches
Retard
It was not on his deathbed. It was in the book "What is Art" wherein he describes the two types of "good art" (which he distinguishes from bad art, which he claims his works, besides the two mentioned, all fall under). The first is religious art, the second universal art.
nothing contradictory has been said
>What's a good translation for Anna Karenina?
Louise and Aylmer Maude, Rosamund Bartlett or Marian Schwartz
>Garnett is serviceable enough
Are you drunk?

>Are you drunk?
Have you actually read it and compared it to the Russian or are you just regurgitating memes?
He was a kook. Dude didn't even wear shoes.
whats the problem with the P&V translation just wondering?
Tolstoy liked Maude, that's the only endorsement that matters.
>he still doesn't know Russian
>tfw no qt Kitty gf
Fredrick Davidson is my fav russian to English translator. I think he has done all of Tolstoy's stuff.
>Louise and Aylmer Maude, Rosamund Bartlett or Marian Schwartz
NEVER TRUST A WOMAN TO FUCKING TRANSLATE ANYTHING. NOT EVEN A FUCKING MENU.
Tolstoy didn't like Shakespeare so I wouldn't take his opinions on English texts very seriously.
