In Freud's "Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality" there's a really good section on foreplay and its relation to eros and tension-building. I think it may shed some light on this if you stretch the text, for sure.
For instance, lots of women like being choked during either/both foreplay and sex itself. The illusion of danger is pretty stimulating, but relating back to Freud, he explains that the role and execution of foreplay is more-or-less tied up in maintaining erotic tension.
