That depends entirely on you, but if you read and listen to a lot of French everyday (which is easy to do on the internet) you'll be surprised at how quickly you can pick it up. Don't worry about learning grammar right away. A lot of it you'll pick up naturally, as children do, and it will slow you down because you'll always be monitoring yourself. Just read and listen. I've only been learning it for a little over a year and I can read fairly difficult novels.

The tough part about reading it in French is the slang, but you can just look up words or phrases you don't understand.

Put 16 hours of study a day in, and you'll be able to understand the syntax and sentence structure. Use assimil. I'd say 4 weeks of full time study would be enough to read with a dictionary beside you. I mean 12 to 16 unbroken hours of study. No TV. No masturbating or pornography or sex.
